This Mother’s Day, I Celebrate You From Afar

Mother’s Day has always been a warm, cherished day for me. A day of flowers, cakes, soft hugs, laughter in the kitchen, lots of cooking, and sweet memories that linger like the scent of her favorite perfume. But this year, the silence is louder. The space she filled so effortlessly is now an ache I carry gently in my heart.

Last June, our world collapsed. We lost mom.

Grief is not a straight line. Some days feel light and full of beautiful memories. Other days, like today, feel like I’m walking through fog, trying to find her voice in the stillness. This upcoming Mother’s Day brings it all rushing back—the laughter, her nurturing words, her many detailed stories of her childhood days, the love she had for her parents especially her dad because she was his only child, her quiet strength, the way her eyes lit up when she smiled.

I didn’t realize how much these little moments would mean until they became memories. I find myself revisiting old messages, holding onto keepsakes, and whispering “I love you” into the wind, hoping somehow it reaches her.

She gave me more than life—she gave me courage, faith, and the gentle reminder to keep going, even when it’s hard. And though she may not be here in body, I feel her with me—in my thoughts, in my choices, every time I am cooking in the kitchen, in the way I love others.

So, this Mother’s Day, while I can’t travel to Toronto to visit her, or I can’t paint her toes, hold her hand or hear her voice, I will still celebrate her. I’ll light a candle in her honor. I’ll wear her ring, something she loved. I’ll cook a meal that reminds me of her warmth. And most of all, I’ll live my life in a way that would make her proud.

To anyone else feeling this quiet kind of grief today, I see you. I feel it too. Let’s hold our mothers close in spirit. Let’s speak their names, share their stories, and remember that love like theirs doesn’t end—it just takes a new form from afar.
